ELIE WIESEL

WAS BORN ON SEPTEMBER 30, 1928

ELIE WIESEL WAS AN AUTHOR WHO WROTE 57

BOOKS, INCLUDING THE BOOK "NIGHT".

HIS PARENTS WERE SARAH FIEG AND CHLOMO WIESEL

AND HE HAD 3 SISTERS, 2 OF THEM SURVIVED THE WAR.

ELIES FAMILY MOSTLY SPOKE YIDISH MOST OF THE TIME.

THEY ALSO SPOKE ROMANIAN, HUNGARIAN, AND GERMAN

ELIES FATHER HAD A STRONG SENSE OF HUMANISM IN HIS SON,

HE ENCOURAGED HIM TO LEARN HEBREW AND TO READ LITERATURE.

IN 1940, ROMANIA LOST THE TOWN OF SIGHET, IN 1944 ELIE, ELIE'S FAMILY,

AND THE REST OF THE TOWN WERE PLACES TO ONE OF THE TWO GHETOS IN SIGHET.

ON MAY 16, 1944, THE HUNGARIAN AUTHORITIES ALLOWED THE GERMAN

ARMY TO DEPORT THE JEWISH COMMUNITY IN SIGHET TO AUSCHIWITZ-BIRKENAU.

WHILE AT AUSCHWITZ, HIS INMATE NUMBER,

A-7713", WAS tattooed onto his left arm.

WIESEL WAS SEPARATED FROM HIS MOTHER AND SISTERS HILDA, BEATRICE,

AND TZIPORA. TZIPORA WAS KILLED IN THE GAS CHAMBERS.

ELIE AND HIS FATHER WAS SENT TO THE

WORK CAMP, BUNA.

ON JANUARY 29, 1945, ELIE'S FATHER WAS

SENT TO THE CREMATORIUM AND DIED.

ON APRIL 11 THE CAMP WAS LIBERATED

BY THE U.S THIRD ARMY.

ELIE SURVIVED THE HOLOCAUST ANWAS AN ORPHAN. HILDA AND

BEATICE ALSO SURVIVED AND WAS SENT TO A FRENCH ORPHANAGE.

AFTER THE WAR, ELIE WIESEL BECAME AN

IMPORTANT AUTHOR.

FOR 10 YEARS AFTER THE WAR, ELIE REFUSED TO TELL THE STORY OF

THE HOLOCAUST BECAUSE HE COULDN'T FIND THE WORDS TO DESCRIBE IT.
