Octavian (AUGUSTUS)
The future emperor Augustus was born into an equestrian family as Gaius Octavius at Rome on 23 September 63 BC. Augustus Caesar restored peace after 100 years of civil war in ancient Rome. He also maintained an honest government and a sound currency system, extended the highway system, developed an efficient postal service, fostered free trade among the provinces, and built many bridges, aqueducts and buildings adorned with beautiful works of art. The empire begins when he is entitled as Augustus.

Lepidus
Lepidus was among Julius Caesar's supporters. He was placed in charge of Rome while Caesar defeated Pompey in Greece. In February 44 BC Caesar was elected dictator for life by the senate.

After Caesar's murder, Lepidus, despite assuring the Senate of his loyalty, allied himself with Mark Antony. Octavian, Antony and Lepidus met on an island. Their armies lined along opposite banks, and formed the Second Triumvirate.

The Second Triumvirate

Is the name historians give to the official political alliance of Octavian (later known as Augustus), Marcus Lepidus, and Mark Antony. It ended when war between Octavian and Mark Antony occurred.

What was the cause of the war between Octavian and Antony?

Despite having married Octavia, Octavian's sister, Antony openly lived in Alexandria with Cleopatra VII of Egypt, even siring children with her. Octavian was angry and declared war on him, chasing him up to Egypt where Antony and Cleopatra commit suicide.
