Herbert Hoover
🔹Ran for President as Republican candidate vs. Alfred E Smith in 1928 and easily won
🔹Known politically to be head of the Food Asministration during WWI
🔹Later became Secretary of Commerce during the Harding and Coolidge administration
🔹Believed in competition, cooperation between workers, and ending poverty in the U.S.
🔹The economy became troubled when he took office

Problems in Agriculture
🔹Farmers bought more land and expensive machines during the 1920s to keep up with the demand from WWI
🔹Crop demand fell after WWI
🔹Farmers had to sell off their surpluses in order to pay their debts
🔹Result: rural depression - farmers couldn't buy new products of the 20s and lived poorly off credit
