BY HARRISON WARDWELL AND RILEY SCALES

The emperor Constantine rebuilt the city of Byzantium and named it Constantinople

Constantinople thrived in the middle ages because they controlled key trade routes the connected Europe and Asia.

Justinian created Justinians code, these laws preserved and spread the heritage of Roman law.

By 1054 the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches were permanently split apart.

The Byzantine empire was conquered by the Ottoman empire and fell in 1453.

After Byzantine fell greek scholars left Constantinople and left to teach at italian universities. The work of these scholars helped create the renaissance.

Russia began in the fertile area of Ukraine, during roman times the people who lived there were called Slavs

In the 700s vikings started exploring Russia's rivers and pillaging settlements.

The vikings also traded with Constantinople.

The city of Kiev in Ukraine became the first Russian state, and it became a center of trade.

Missionaries from Constantonople were sent to try and convert the Slavs to christianity.

Russians adopted Byzantine art, music, and architecture.

The Mongols were tough conquerors but they were lenient rulers.

Russian rulers led the way that the Mongols had.

Two greek monks translated the bible into Slavic, thus allowing the Slavs to learn more about Christianity.
