AFRICAN AMERICANS

And their Impact on History

CIVIL WAR

  • Before 1862, colored people were unable to join the war effort
  • Weren't allowed to participate in noncombat duties
  • Had to build roads and camps
  • 5% blacks and 15% white soldiers deserted the army
  • 19,000 blacks served in US Navy

POLITICS

  • Jim Crow Laws limited colored voter's rights in the late 1800's
  • Hiram Revels was the first colored man in Senate in 1870
  • African americans were stopped from participating in state and federal offices
  • Most black politicians were war veterans

ECONOMY

  • Imports of slaves went from early 17th century to 1865
  • Imports rose dramatically in 1860
  • Number of plantations rose in the 1860's
  • Harsh punishments were their incentives to work
  • Produced massive amounts of cotton with a minimal labor cost

EXTRA FACTS

  • By 1825, America had 1/4 of all Africans in the New World
  • During war, 14,500 free slaves served in the Union Army
  • Slave workers had built 9,500 miles of railroad by 1860
