  • They lived in the U.S.A
  • They lived throughout North and South America
  • They lived in Alaska and Hawaii as well

  • Community offers collective protection, shared wisdom and resources
  • Tribes are a important part of survival
  • Apache, Navajo & Mohican are examples of tribes

  • Teepees made with wood and buffalo hides
  • The Pueblo Indians created adobe houses made of clay and straw

CLOTHING & FOOTWEAR

  • Tanned leather to make mocassins
  • Skins of animals used for clothing
  • They used feathers to adorn head pieces
  • By wearing animal hides they were able to stay warm in cold weather

PLANTS

  • Native Americans used plants & herbs to heal wounds and treat illnesses
  • They passed along information and remedies from one generation to another

  • Blow guns

HUNTING

  • The Native Americans primarily hunted buffalo
  • Some of them were nomadic which means they followed the herd
  • Native Americans used body paint to help blend in when they went hunting
  • Dead falls and snares were 2 techniques used to hunt small animals

WATER

  • All life needs water
  • Indians relied on rivers and lakes for fresh water

FIRE

  • Fire was critical to survival
  • Allowed for cooking food and curing fish
  • Created warmth
  • Created light
  • Used as warning signal and kept away animals and spirits
  • Used to clear land
  • Most common way that the started a fire was by striking 2 stones together like pyrites stones

FISHING

  • Used spears
  • Fishing weirs were traps built of rock and wood that would be built downstream to trap fish
