THE HISTORY OF TECHNOLOGY IN MUSIC

BY: SOFIA AND MARA

Music used to be composed and you could only listen to the music live. Major composers were: Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Bach, and Haydn.

The phonograph was the first advancement in music. Thomas Edison experimented with a diaphragm which had an embossing point and was held against rapidly-moving paraffin paper.

The microphone was the second advancement. Emile Berliner was inspired by Alexander Graham Bell's telephone invention so much that he created his own model with improvements

The magnetic tape was another advancement. Fritz Pfleumer conducted a trial-and-error process of finding an alternative to magnetic wires. He'd eventually adhere iron oxide powder to thin paper with lacquer and patent the world's first magnetic recording tape.

The AEG Magnetophon Tape Recorder was another advancement.
The Magnetophon was designed with Pfleumer's magnetic tape in mind. As with most original iterations of these devices, Magnetophon's first recordings were distorted and nearly inscrutable. But by 1939, tape manufacturers began using a different kind of oxide that provided extra clarity and helped cement Magnetophon as a pioneering piece of aural history.

The Walkman is another advancement. This is a convenient, fashionable way to make an already portable innovation even more portable.

The Commercial Compact disc. It took harnessing surface laser-beam reflections that converted digital data into analog sound.

Pro tools started as Sound Tools, a completely digital recording and editing system for Apple Macintosh. But it was the reboot as Pro Tools with multitrack capabilities and faster processing.

The MP3 player. Karlheinz Bradenburg helped a professor search for ways to apply digital-phone technology to music transmission.

SoundCloud was the last advancement that led to all of the apps and things we have today. SoundCloud was established in Berlin on August 27, 2007, by Swedish sound designer Alexander Ljung and Swedish electronic musician Eric Wahlforss, and the website was launched on October 17, 2008.
