history of pencils

The first pencil made was the stylus. Next came the lead pencil. It was created in 1564 when a huge graphite mine was found in Borrowdate, Cumbria England. The graphite had been sawn into sheets then eventually cut into square rods. They were put into hand-carved wood holders forming a pencil (Werner ).

Eventually the modern pencil which we use today was invented in 1795 by Nicholas Jacques conte, a scientist that had served in the army. The magical material he had started out with was pure carbon other wise known as graphite. Graphite was first discovered in Europe in the 15th century. It was called lead or "plumbago" (popova).

The pencil has changed a lot over time. In Ancient Rome people used the stylus. They used a metal rod to leave a light mark on papyrus. The next stages of the stylus used lead. Then in England people started using graphite that left a darker mark. Originally the graphite was wrapped in string. In 1662 graphite was inserted in wooden sticks. (Pencil history)

The pencil is not only used for writing. It is also used for drawing and sketching. (Chipman)

The pencil has impacted our society because artists, kids, adults, teenagers, or about anyone can use it. The wooden coat covering the lead made it to where we can sharpen our pencils for more convience. (Impact on technology on education)

THIS WAS THE FIRST PENCIL EVER MADE. THE STYLUS

THEN THIS LEAD PENCIL WAS MADE IN 1564

THEN THIS MODERN PENCIL WAS MADE IN 1795

Concept
We type our reports today instead of writing them, we use electric pencil sharpeners and mechanical pencils.
