THE HISTORY OF BUBBLEGUM

WHO?

• Originally came from Greeks
• Medival times kings and queens used it
• John Curtis and his son started marketing gum

Process:
John and his son thought they could package and market gum. They first boiled off chemicals and remnants of bark, added sugar, rolled it, dipped in cornstarch, then wrapped it. Finally made machine to make mass amounts in less time. Later founded 1st chewing gum factory-- Curtis gum company.

WHERE?

• Originally comes from Mastic Tree
• Now comes from Sapodilla Tree
• Sapodilla tree grows in Guatemala and now Central america
• Chicle ( used to make gum ) comes from bark of tree

• Produces edible fruit too

• Grows up to 30m tall (100ft )

SAPODILLA FRUIT

• Shape of mango, looks like coconut
• Pick, cut, and eat
• Make into desserts- custard, ice-cream

HOW?

• Chicleros ( workers who get chicle from trees )
• Chicleros cut zig zag in tree and chicle dripps down
• Tapped every 4-5 years NEVER CUT DOWN WHOLE TREE

WHY?

• Greeks were curious
• Used for cosmetics
• Breath fresheners
• Thirst quenchers
