PRINCE HENRY SPONSORS PORTUGUESE EXPLORERS

  • The Portuguese navigators discovered and claimed the Maderia and Azores islands, and by 1415, had also expanded into Muslim North Africa, seizing the port of Ceuta.
  • After other countries see Portugal's success, they also begin exploring.
  • Prince Henry sparked this movement, and without him, countries may not have explored.

CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS DISCOVERS THE CARIBBEAN ISLANDS

  • His original goal was to sail to the East Indies, however, he greatly underestimated the size of the Earth.
  • He accidentally discovered the Caribbean and believed it to be the East Indies.
  • If he hadn't found the New World, that land wouldn't have been claimed.

HERNAN CORTES CONQUERS THE AZTECS

  • In 1521, Hernan Cortes and his Indian allies captured and demolished Tenochitilan.
  • Without this event, Spain wouldn't have expanded.

ENGLISH COLONIES AND PILGRIMS

  • England began establishing colonies along the Eastern seaboard in the 1600s
  • In 1620, the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
  • A lot of history would not be the same if America had never been formed.

BOHEMIAN REVOLTS

  • It was an uprising of the Bohemian Estates against the Hapsburg Dynasty.
  • Caused by religious and power disputes.
  • Triggered the Thirty Years War.

ENGLISH CIVIL WAR

  • A struggle between the monarchy an parliament over wether England was going to be an absolute monarchy or not.
  • Would eventually cause England to become a constitutional monarchy.

THE RESTORATION

  • Parliament invites Charles ll to be the king of England.
  • This is called "the Restoration" because it brung England back to someone like its earlier ruler.
  • This would eventually lead to the Glorious Revolution.

THE GLORIOUS REVOLUTION

  • The overthrow of King James ll.
  • Caused Parliament to invite William and Mary to become king and queen.
  • Causes England to become a constitutional monarchy.

SEVEN YEARS WAR

  • Involved a struggle for North America between France and Great Britain, as well as Austria vs. Prussia.
  • It was ended by the Treaty of Paris.
  • Officially marked the end of the French Empire in America.

TREATY OF PARIS

  • Officially ended the worldwide war between the British and French.
  • France was forced to cede Canada and its lands east of the Mississippi, and the regained their sugar producing islands and slave trade outposts.
  • This ended a long war and helped America grow larger.
