A. The Underground Railroad activity did not literally take place underground or a railroad. A lot of the Underground Railroad sites are either destroyed, rundown, or tuned into historic landmarks.

B. The Underground Railroad was an event to help slaves to escape from the south to freedom in the north. Stations in Chambersburg were for former slaves escaping through the mountainous terrain to freedom in the north. This was a very dangerous and illegal event.

C. The Underground Railroad was in the pre-civil war period. A local barber Henry Watson assisted fugitive slaves as they passed through Chambersburg helping to keep them safe from the slave catcher/ bounty hunters searching for them.

D. The Underground Railroad helped free about 100,000 slaves from the south in 1810-1850. In 1820 the first long distance route of the Underground Railroad was from North Carolina to Indiana. By 1870 the railroad had reached its symbolic end. Levi coffin (underground veteran) declares our work is done.

E. Some countries come to America because they want freedom. Soldiers in Iraq have been fighting to protect the united states and our freedom.
