1920S MATERIALISM

Amanda Nelson and Maddi Miller

Materialism Defined:
A tendency to consider material goods and physical comfort more important than spiritual needs and values.

With America's growing average income the standard of living was raised.

During the 1920s cars became more accessible to the average American family, however there were a select few like Gatsby that could afford the best of the best.

Women were becoming more indulgent as the fashion became more modernized. Myrtle is the epitome of materialism, because she desires the most extravagant goods.

Gatsby's parties represents America's new found level of materialism, because of the alcohol, extravagant food, and music.

Materialism during the 1920s was based solely off of pleasure that the high life could provide, while pre-WWI consumerism was about necessity.
