HIRSCHSPRUNG'S DISEASE

DESCRIPTION

  • Condition that affects the large intestines(colon)
  • Results from missing nerve cells in the muscles of part or all of the babys colon

CAUSES

  • Problems with passing stool
  • Usually unable to have bowel movements in first days of birth

SYMPTOMS

  • Swollen belly
  • Problems passing stool
  • Vomiting
  • Not wanting to eat
  • Constipation, not gaining weight or growing

DETECTION

  • Present when baby is born
  • Some mild cases cant be found until later in childhood

TREATMENT

  • Treated with surgery to by pass or remove diseased part or colon
