  • 1914- 1993
  • Won Pulitzer Prize for "A Bell for Adano"
  • Popular for War Novels/ Journalism
  • Wrote "Hiroshima" immediately after bombing

Mrs. Hatsuyo Nakamura

  • A tailor's widow raising three young children on her own.
  • A very resourceful person and cares very much about her surroundings.
  • She and her children survived the initial blast and were unharmed.
  • They then suffered radiation mutations and sickness for years.

Mr. Kiyoshi Tanimoto

  • A Methodist pastor with a wife and baby son
  • Educated in the US, speaks English very well
  • Shuttled people across the river and gave dying people water
  • Didn't stop helping until struck with radiation sickness
  • Only one still living at end of book

Dr. Fuji

  • The owner of a private hospital in the city
  • His clinic was washed away when the bomb went off 
  • Like most of the other doctors he was too hurt to aid others  
  • Was not affected by radiation  
  • He died a fews year later of a mystery illness 

Father Kleinsorge

  •  He is a German Jesuit priest
  • He comforts many of the dying or wounded 
  • He falls sick with radiation poisoning and becomes tired and weak
  • He becomes a Japanese citizen  
  • Changes his name to Father Makoto Takakura.

Dr. Sasaki

  • 25 year old surgeon at the Red Cross Hospital in Hiroshima.
  • Selflessness is shown when he treats sick patients without a permit.
  • Makes important contributions to treatment of radiation sickness.
  • He also doesn't seek rewards for his hard work.

Miss TOshiko Sasaki

  • 20 year old lady who works at a tin factory
  • Was in arranged mariage to soldier
  • Bookshelf fell on her leg and crippled for life
  • Becomes a faithful Christian and joins a French Nunary

The Aftermath
