HINDUISM BASICS

DHARMA

  • Dharma is the "law and order of the universe".
  • Today, it is used for meaning truth
  • Ex. "He speaks the dharma"

KARMA

  • The belief that whatever you do comes back to you.
  • Aka: what goes around comes around.
  • Today it maintains the same meaning.

REINCARNATION

  • The belief that people are born again with a different body after death
  • Ex. You being human in this life and you be "reborn" as a tiger in another.
  • Today it holds the same meaning.

THE VEDAS

  • They are the oldest sacred books in Hinduism
  • There are 4 books
  • They contain incantations,rituals, and hymns
  • Aka " the books of knowledge"
  • Today it is almost unknown but it plays a key feature for Hindu philosophy.

CASTE SYSTEM

  • a process of placing people in occupational groups.
  • Castes are ranked in hierarchical order
  • Has 4 levels
  • Today, the caste system isn't openly acknowledged
  • But you can still see observances of area and family style ranking.
