Slide Notes

Struggling readers often have a great deal of difficulty learning sight words because they don't follow the rules.

Much time needs to be spent on these words so students remember them.

Teachers used to simply have students memorize the words. The Science of Reading has shown us that we need to point out the phonetically regular parts of the words and teach to the irregular part of the word.

The first problem...

Most sight words don't have tangible meaning
of
for
from

many are functional and abstract that children cannot connect meaning to.

Also...

  • Many of these words share the same letters
  • of, for, from
  • oh/no, saw/was
  • the, there, this, that, they, them
To many children, remembering these words is like trying to remember the pronunciation of words in a foreign language when you don' t know the meaning.

Orthographic Mapping

  • The process of storing a word permanently in memory for instant retrieval

How do teachers help?

Associative Learning
A piece of cake for Thomas. Once students can associate meaning to of then you can introduce for and so on.

Give the words context.
