Background

  • Japan is reigned by Emperor Hirohito
  • Japan is doing very well with economic growth and creating a greater democracy
  • Slowly in 1920's economy grew slower, socialist elected into the "Diet", younger generations revolted against tradition, and tensions grew between goverment and military

  • Ultra nationalists wanted new expansions and wanted change in the downfall Japan had
  • Members of the ¨patriotic¨ societies were assassinating politicians and the Military leaders plotted to overthrow gov
  • eventually government took away all democratic freedoms and the nationalists were happy

His rise to power

  • Tojo was appointed head of the military police
  • He soon earned higher titles
  • In May 1938 he was titled minister of war
  • Then in October 1941 he was appointed prime minister by the emperor himself

Life under his rule

  • Tojo was harsh,strict, and stubborn
  • Tojo wanted war
  • He caused an attack on the pearl harbor against America
  • He also wanted to fight against most countries and believed that to wipe the nation slate clean they would have to fight in long wars

  • Eventually the Americans got close enough to get revenge on Japan and Tojo was forced into retirement
  • Since tojo had caused many problems he was then going to be arrested
  • He tried to commite suicide but failed

  • He was then jailed and had 2 yea long trial where was found guilty for much of Japans wartime policy and criminal attacks on her neighbors
  • He was then sentenced to death by hanging

  • Count 1 (waging wars of aggression, and war or wars in violation of international law) Count 27 (waging unprovoked war against the Republic of China) Count 29 (waging aggressive war against the United States of America) Count 31 (waging aggressive war against the British Commonwealth of Nations)
