WHAT MAKES JEM A HERO?

Bravery

Smart/quick

"“No sir, just with matches.” I admired my brother. Matches were dangerous, but cards were fatal." (6)

When asked what kind of poker they were playing, Jem quickly thinks of a safer answer.

Kind/compassionate
"His face was streaked with angry tears as we made our way through the cheerful crowd." (22)

Jem cries when Tom does not win in his trial. He also saves the rolypoly when scout wants to crush it.

Moral
"Then he rose and broke the remaining code of our childhood. He went out of the room and down the hall. “Atticus,” his voice was distant, “can you come here a minute, sir?” (14)

When Dill sneaks into their house as a runaway, Jem goes right away to tell Atticus that he is there and do the right thing.
