THE EXPEDITION OF HERNAN CORTES
Cortes was chosen to lead an expedition to Mexico in 1518.
11 vessels with 550 Spaniards and 200 servants. Officers included Diego de Ordás, Alfonso d’Avila, Francisco de Montejo, Andrés de Tapia, and the pilot Alaminos.
When Cortes climbed over the mountains summit he saw a city full of riches and packed with thousands of Aztecs.
Cortes became friends with the Aztecs, until the Aztecs started to sacrifice his men which started a battle between them.
After his victory over the Aztecs, Cortés faced challenges to his authority and position. He traveled to Honduras in 1524 to stop a rebellion against him in the area. Back in Mexico, Cortés found himself removed from power. He traveled to Spain to plead his case to the king,CaSpainbut he was not reappointed to his governorship. He then died on Decenber 2, 1547.
