Heliocentric Theory

As an Introduction

  • My topic: Heliocentric theory and models, as well as the impact of Copernicus and Galileo in Shakespearean times

Facts on Heliocentric Theory

  • Opposite to geocentric theory
  • Theorized that the sun is the center of our solar system
  • Was first published in 1543
  • Was accepted after Galileo observed Venus both in front and behind the sun.

The Start

  • Whilst heliocentric theory was published by Copernicus in 1543 in his book: "On the Revolution of Heavenly Spheres".
  • It was first theorized by Aristarchus of Samos in 3rd century BCE
  • However, the first philosophers to propose a moving earth was the Pythagorean philosopher Philolaus who died in 390 BCE

Background on My Scientists

  • Copernicus was born on February 19 1473
  • Galileo was born February 15 1564
  • The heliocentric model was fully banned by the Roman Catholic Inquisition in 1633 and Galileo was fully banned from even talking or defending it until his death in 1642

Philolaus

  • Proposed the earth would move, but not around the sun
  • Taught the pyrocentric model in his time although his works are mostly missing or destroyed
  • His model only included five planets(Mercury Venus Mars Jupiter and Saturn) as well as the sun.

Copernicus

  • Copernicus could see 5 other planets in orbit around the sun but his model had six, because of Earth
  • in his model there was Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn
  • his views on our world were not accepted until much later, after he had died. however Shakespeare uses the geocentric model for all of his plays.
