  • stiff, sharp spines
  • size of a teacup
  • comparable to hamsters
  • eat insects, worms, centipedes, snails, mice, frogs and snakes

  • when threatened, curl up into prickley, unappetizing ball
  • in deserts, sleep through heat and droughts

  • mothers protect the young
  • if nest is messed with, mothers may eat young, but mostly move to another nest
  • when foraging for food - grunts like a pig "hedgeHOG"
