WHAT IS HEAD LICE

  • Parasitic insects that live in the human hair
  • Suck blood from the scalp
  • Severe itching caused by their saliva
  • Extremely communicable
  • Can live without a host for up to 2 days

HOW DO YOU GET LICE

  • Sharing brushes
  • Sharing helmets
  • Headrests
  • Infected bed sheets

SYMPTOMS

  • Itchy scalp
  • Sensation of movement on the scalp
  • Visible nits

  • School age children
  • Daycares, camps, playgrounds, headrests from planes & theaters
  • Most common in girls ages 3-10 & their families
  • 2nd most common communicable health issue
  • 6-12 million people get lice every year

  • Special shampoos
  • Removal of nits with comb
  • Wash all bedsheets
  • Do not share hats, brushes...

  • Can be seen with the naked eye
  • Commonly known as crabs

TREATMENT

  • OTC lice killing lotion with 1% permethrin
  • Lindaine shampoo is a prescription option that also kills the eggs
  • Lindaine can be toxic & only used as a last resort
