Hawaiian History
The Hawaiian culture is located in Hawaii. The first people to come to Hawaii were Polynesians. Hundreds of years later Tahiti people arrived and enslaved everyone. Now Hawaiian religion is Polytheistic. Many Hawaiians were killed or died of diseases. In 1778 some sailors estimated there were one million natives.
Many Hawaiians thought white men were gods. They soon realized white men could feel pain and die. Guns completely changed Hawaii's political system. In 1795 Hawaii got their first king named Kamehameha. For years, Hawaii was monarchy. It became republican in 1894. Then became the 15th state in 1959. Trading fur and sandal wood led to cutting down most of Hawaii's forests.
Cosmogony
The Hawaiian culture is chaos. They thinks in the beginning it was only darkness. There were two gods. A man, Kumulipo which means "existence of darkness". The other was a woman, Po'ele which means "darkness" its self. They created everything of darkness that became slightly lighter. Like shellfish, plants, and grubs. They gave birth to Pouliuli a man, and Poweniwehi a woman. They created everything of almost-dark , like fish and some land animals. The deep darkness of the world got a little brighter.
The second couple gave birth to a man Po'el'ee which means "night", and a woman Ponaha which means "coming to dawn". They created everything in Darkness-near-dawn, like insects and a large egg. The large egg hatched into thousands of birds. They gave birth to Popanopano and Polaloww who made sea-turtles and lobsters in near-darkness. They gave birth to a man Po'hiolo which means "night ending" and a woman Po'ne'a'aku. They created everything else. By this time the earth was almost dawn and was buzzing with life. Ki'i, the first man, and La'ila'a, the first woman were born. There skin was dark since they were born at dawn and became lighter each generation.

All the stories of going to the underworld after the dead and then restoring it to the body are based on What the Hawaiians believed. The soul may wander away from their body, leaving it sleeping, and visit another dream. Kubuna can only see the spirit of the dead or dying. Everyone is afraid of the visible form of a dead person. Lapu has human shape and speaks in the same voice but has a bigger power. It cannot change into another shape. The soul of a dead person may enter an object, usually a bone.
