Biography

  • Harvey Milk (1930-78)
  • LGBT Activist
  • First openly homosexual elected into office
  • Fought endlessly to protect the rights of minorities and deeply touched the lives of those around him
  • Brutally assassinated a year into his term

  • Founded the Castro Village association after two gay men were prevented from starting up a business
  • Worked tirelessly to make sure Proposition 6 would not pass into law

What he represented

  • Protected the rights of not only LGBT, but other minorities as well
  • Created daycare programs for working mothers
  • Recycled abandoned government buildings into low budget housing
  • Reformed the tax code to attract industry into deserted warehouses and facilities

Strategies

  • Participated in many non-violent protests, silent vigils and gay pride marches
  • Used locally but affected globally

Accomplishments and lasting effects

  • Addressed the issue of gays not being allowed to own or operate businesses or teach in schools
  • Progress made in the military and same sex marriage, however there is room for improvement
