What is Metadata retention??
Data retention is the thing that defines your actions in the virtual world whether it’s in a call text email or normal communication. It is data made of data that in turn records what you do. It is important to know what data is recorded in metadata

Metadata is commonly misunderstood to be some of the following:

The content of a communication such as a phone call or an email
The subject line of an email
The content of the discussion in a chat room online (what is said)
The content of a mobile phone text message (SMS)
Attachments to emails such as photos or videos
Web camera transmissions
Websites a person visits (i.e. browsing histories)
The name of a website a person visits
The substance of a person's social media posts

What data retention is actually recording? :
Telephone numbers
The time and length of phone calls
The internet protocol addresses (IP addresses) of computers from which messages are received or sent
Location of parties making phone calls
To and from email addresses on emails
Logs of visitors to chat rooms online
Status of chat sites – whether they are active and how many people are participating
Chat aliases or identifiers (the name a person uses in a chat room online)
Start and finish times of internet sessions
The location of an individual involved in communications
The name of the application someone uses online and when, where and for how long used
As found on ‘Sydney Morning Herald Digital Life’ on their article ‘what is ‘metadata’ and should you worry if it’s stored by law?

How does it affect you?
This will be fine for most users and you most likely won’t know it even exists. It just tracks your history to help provide advertisements to you and what you are interested in.

Possible negative outcome

It will affect you if you pirate anything as it leaves a data record based on your download record. As a result users can be prosecuted.
There is also an issue of privacy as Australia’s metadata retention laws do not require that government agencies get a warrant to access user meta data.

Positive outcome

It can be used by police force and government to find and prosecute people that could be involved in illegal activity.

Other uses of metadata include:

advertising company’s, Apple, Google
This will also help people be able to make money out of the stuff there making and presenting to people rather than getting pirated of the internet
