TORNADOES ARE...

  • Violent spinning columns of air
  • DAngerous
  • It forms from extending funnels of a thundercloud
  • It starts horizontal, then changes to vertical
  • Wind speeds of up to 300 mph

Tornadoes can occur in any season, anywhere, but are most common march through May. Tornado alley consists of the Dakotas, texas, Kansas, and many more (even the north)

HOW ARE TORNADOES

  • Measured: fujita scale- damage & wind speed
  • Detected : doppler radar
  • Forecasted: satellite pictures

DAMAGES

  • 69% of all tornadoes are labeled 'weak'
  • 29% of all tornadoes are labeled 'strong'
  • 12% of all tornadoes are labeled 'violent'
  • On average, 60 people are Killed by tornadoes per year

SAFETY

  • Go into a closet (no windows) and stay there
  • STAY INSIDE UNTIL OFFICIALS SAY IT's ok
  • You should have a tornado disaster kit
  • It should have canned food, bottled water,
  • Flashlights, a battery operated radio and a first aid kit

MORE SAFETY

  • a watch means that tornadoes are possible in the area
  • A warning means that a tornado is either on the ground,
  • Or has been detected by doppler radar- seek shelter!

tornadoes are not really a threat to NYC because most and many of the worst tornadoes happen far from NYC, plus not a lot of warm air comes our way and collides with cold air to create a tornado in the first place

It's important to study weather because scientists still can't determine too far ahead of time when a tornado will hit.
