COLONIES OF HAITI

  • Haiti started as a Spanish colony and became French
  • Haiti had a royal colony
  • A royal colony is one ruled by a governor appointed by a monarch

  • Haiti is 1/3 of and island called Hispaniola
  • Hispaniola is in the Caribbean Islands
  • The major city during the colonial times is Port-au-Prince on the Gulf of Gonave

  • Settlers came from Spain they came for gold and to raise food
  • Many settlers became pirates that were called buccaneers
  • They attacked ships carrying gold and silver to Spain
  • They came to the new world to find gold
  • a large percentage of pepope is slaves

  • they also have tons of spice and coffee exports

  • In 1606 Spaniards left the island and went to Peru and Mexico
  • mountian cover 80% of Haiti
  • the average temperature i haiti is 50 - 95 degreese
  • England, France, and the Dutch took over the abandoned Hispaniola when the Spaniards left.
