ESSENTIAL QUESTION

WHY IS FAITH ESSENTIAL FOR SURVIVAL?

SORCE: HYWEL D. LEWIS AND ANTONY G.N. FLEW

SORCE NAME “SURVIVAL”
The source I chose is an article by Hywel D. Lewis and Antony G.N. Flew called “Survival”. This article looks at what it really means to survive and how faith plays a role in that. I picked this article because it talks about survival in a deeper way. The authors explain that survival is not just about the body, but also about the soul and belief in life after death. It shows how faith gives meaning to survival, which connects directly to my essential question.

CONNECTION TO FAITH

The article explains that faith in survival gives people hope. If people believe the soul continues after death, then even when life is painful, they still find meaning. Lewis says that religious believers depend on this kind of faith. Without it, life and survival feel empty because there is no purpose on the body. This shows that faith is not just about religion. It is about having something bear to believe in when life is hard.

QUOTE

“WITHOUT FAITH IN SOME FORM OF SURVIVAL, RELIGIONS BELIEF COLLAPSES”.
I chose a quote because it is short, but very powerful. It shows that faith is the foundation for survival because without it, religion and hope fall apart. This connects to “Night” because prisoners who lost faith lost Hope, while those who kept faith were able to endure the suffering. The quote helps answer my question by providing that faith is what gives survival its meaning and strength.

HOW THE ARTICLE CONNECTS TO “NIGHT”

In night, Elie Wiesel shows how faith was tested in the holocaust. Some prisoners lost faith in God when they saw so much death and cruelty. when they lost faith, many of them also lost the strength to go on. Others kept some kind of faith, either in God, or their loved ones, or even in the idea of survival itself. Like the article says, faith gave them meaning, and that meaning gave them a reason to endure. This connection makes it clear that faith is essential for survival , both in belief and in real life situations like the camps.
