SPIDER-MAN INTO THE SPIDERVERSE

BY BOB PERSICHETTI, PETER RAMSEY, AND RODNEY ROTHMAN AND PRESENTATION FROM JOSEPH AU PERIOD 2

Why is it dangerous to allow society to establish our self worth?

Untitled Slide

The article “Self Esteem in the Hands of Society” by Jack Kanouzi, argues that society has been and continues to control our self worth. This article is found on websites like Google and Safari. In this article, Kanouzi investigates different points of views and ways that society influences on individual esteem. This problem can result to depression, struggles with relationships we may have with our family and friends, and also other mental health issues that effects us as a person. Knowing the meaning of self esteem creates the question, if different ages, races, and social structures are included.

Changes in Self Esteem During Early Life:

Kanouzi states how “self esteem can be malleable, with prior work suggesting that it decreases slightly during a transtion from elementary to junior high”(Kanouzi,3). At theese times, many kids decrease in their confidence and view of themselves due to presussure from society and comments they hear from others about themselves.

Race in Self Esteem:

When it comes to society thoughts on a person’s self worth, the race you are, can sadly be a major contribute. People assume the type of person you are due to the color of your skin and this is shown in the article when the author icludes “with respect to race, given the prevalence of substantial socioeconomic disadvanatages, one might expect the self-esteem of African Americans to be lower than that of Caucasians”(Kanouzi,4). However, the article then states how several studies have shown that they atleast have an equal or higher level of self-esteem.

Increasing Interdependance:

When people have a low self esteem, it can effect how people act in their relationships. The article expands through this topic when claiming “Self-esteem has been negatively associated with behaviors that risk
rejection to increase interdependence among people who were relatively high in relational self construal but positively associated with behaviors that risk rejection to increase interdependence among people who were relatively low in relation self-construal”(Kanouzi,6). Depending on the person and their level of self esteem, they either take social risks to create relationships with others or keep to themselves.

Conclusion/Relation to my Movie:

When looking back at Spiderman Into the Spider-Verse and comparing it to the information from the source I used, there are many comparisons that was similar to what the article had said about self esteem. Miles Morales faced many adveraries as Spiderman due to his age, confidence, and self concept of himself. In his mind he believed the opinions of others about how he was not ready to take this responsibility but as the movie continued, he fixed his self esteem by believing in himself and blocking any negative comments.
