BASE

  • Definition: A base is a chemical species that donates electrons or hydroxide ions.
  • My own Words: A base is a chemical species that accepts protons.

COLLIGATIVE

  • Definition: Depending on the quantity of particles, especially molecules or ions, but not on their chemical nature: colligative properties.
  • My own Words: depending on the number of molecules.

COLLOID

  • Definition: A type of homogeneous mixture in which the dispersed particles do not settle out.
  • My own Words: the solid suspended phase in such a mixture.

CONCENTRATION

  • Definition: The amount of a substance per defined space.
  • My own Words: Concentration usually is expressed in terms of mass per unit volume.

DILUTION

  • Definition: a solution containing a relatively small quantity of solute as compared with the amount of solvent.
  • My own Words: Dilution is when something is watered down or weakened.

IMMISCIBLE

  • Definition: Immiscible is the property where two substances are not capable of combining to form a homogeneous mixture.
  • My own Words: incapable of mixing.

MISCINBLE

  • Definition: soluble, able to be mixed to form a solution.
  • My own Words: Alcohol and water are miscible.

MOLALITY

  • Definition: a unit of concentration, defined to be equal to the number of moles of solute divided by the number of kilograms of solvent.
  • My own Words: number of moles of solute per kilogram of solvent.

MOLARITY

  • Definition: The concentration of a solution expressed in moles of solute per liter of solution.
  • My own Words: number of moles of solute per liter.

OSMOSIS

  • Definition: the process where solvent molecules move through a semipermeable membrane from a dilute solution into a more concentrated solution.
  • My own Words:
