PRESENTATION OUTLINE

CAUSES OF ACID PRECIPITATION

  • Air pollution from burning of fossil fuels is one major cause of acid precipitation.
  • The main chemicals in air pollution that cause acid rain precipitation sulfur dioxide (SO2)and nitrogen (NOX).

HOW ACID PRECIPITATION AFFECTS PLANTS,SOILS,AND AQUATIC ECOSYSTEMS .

  • As lakes and streams become more acidic, the numbers and types of fish and other aquatic plants and the other animals that live there decrease .
  • Some types of plants and animals can tolerate acidic waters .
  • Also large numbers of fish die and it effects the reproduction of fish and amphibians.
  • They produce fewer eggs ,and those eggs often don't even hatch.
  • The offspring that survive often have birth defects and can't reproduce .

HOW ACID PRECIPITATION AFFECTS PLANTS,SOIL,AND AQUATIC ECOSYSTEMS

  • Other plants and animals are acidic sensitive and will be lost as the ph declines.
  • It affects the soil because the acid takes away nutrients from soil.
  • Some soils are better able to neutralize acid than others.
  • In areas where the soils buffering capacity is low,the harmful effects of acid precipitation are much greater.
  • Also acid precipitation can cause a drop in the pH of soil and water.it causes aluminum and other toxic metals to be released and possibly absorbed by the roots of plants, causing root damage.also sulfur dioxides water vapor clogs the opening on the surfaces of plants.

WAYS THAT ACID PRECIPITATION AFFECTS HUMANS

  • Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, which are the main sources of acid precipitation, can irritate or damage our lungs.
  • The pollutants that cause acid precipitation can also reduce visibility, which is the limiting how far into distance we can see.
  • An increase in respiratory problems in a community's children.
  • Also cause respiratory diseases like asthma or chronic bronchitis.

WAYS THAT COUNTRIES ARE WORKING TOGETHER TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM OF ACID PRECIPITATION

  • Canada and the United States signed the Canada-u.s. Air Quality Agreement in 1991.
  • Both countries agreed to reduce acidic emissions that flowed across the Canada-U.S. boundary.
  • More international agreements like this may be necessary to control the acid-precipitation problem.
