H-BOMB

  • It was estimated that the Hydrogen bomb would have the force of 1 million tons of TNT
  • The US and Soviet Union began a race to see which country could create the bomb first
  • On Nov. 1st, 1952 the US won the race when they let off the bomb
  • In 1953 the Soviets exploded their own bomb

U-2 INCIDENT

  • In 1955 the CIA began making secret flights over other countries, using U-2 planes
  • By 1960, US officials grew nervous that the planes would be spotted, and Eisenhower wanted to stop the flights
  • The last flight was spotted and Francis G. Powers was sent to prison; Eisenhower denied that they had been spying
  • The Soviets had evidence, however, and Eisenhower finally admitted to it.
  • After refusing to apologize, Khrushchev called off the summit. After this, tension occurred between the Super Powers
