The Role of Women in the Old West

Facing the frontier independentally
-Western women settled in many parts of the West faster and in greater numbers
-Many females were excited about pioneering and were interested in self defendant opportunities
-By 1880s women were moving west in large numbers and continued to do so until the First World War

VIOLENCE IN THE OLD WEST VS. MYTH OF VIOLENCE

The AMERICAN WEST WAS NOT VERY VIOLENT
-The Wester Frontier, "was a far more civilized, more peaceful and safer place than American society today."
-Property rights were protected and civil order was successful through private agencies which minimized disputes and violence
-Miners began contacts with one another to establish property rights in land
-Untrue that white European settlers were always at war with Indians
-Trade and cooperation with the Indians were much more common than conflict and violence during the first half of the nineteenth century

Confederate Army Soldier and Leader
-Lifespan: July 31, 1837-June 6, 1865
-Born in Dover, OH
-Occupation: Military
-Cause of Death: Murder
-Military Service: Confederate Army (1862-1865)
-Has known to have fled to become a gambler in Salt Lake City, where he shot and killed a man over a poker game
-In 1860, he joined a group called the Jayhawkers and helped them on a raid to free some Missouri slaves
-Fought in the Battle of Wilson's Creek which led him to become a leader of a renegade band of 400 outlaws and guerrillas known as Quantrill's Raiders

Quantrill's Raiders

-Fought for the Southern cause through banditry, bushwhacking, and brutality
-Fought along side Confederate forces in battle on August 11th 1862
-
