How could practices now seen as racist and exclusionary gain widespread acceptance among scientists, intellectuals, and politicians and subsequently be used to involuntarily sterilize citizens?
Are there individuals for whom sterilization is a legitimate response by the state (e.g., murderers, convicted rapists, disabled individuals who are unable to care for themselves, individuals with multiple children and who are unable to care for them)?
If a family had three generations of individuals who were disabled to the point where they could not care for themselves, should they be sterilized? If involuntary sterilization is legitimate under some circumstances, who makes the decisions about sterilization?
From the perspective of this course and our focus on the meaning of "disability" in the 21st C., what do you think is the most significant aspect of research that showed nearly everyone in Chillmark - the Deaf and the hearing - understood and used sign language?
