GUIDE DOGS ARE ASSISTANCE DOGS TRAINED TO LEAD BLIND PEOPLE AROUND OBSTACLES.

PUPPY GUIDE DOGS

  • At 6-8 weeks, the pups begin to learn house manners and obedience.
  • At 14-16 months, they begin their formal guide dog training (which takes 2-3 months)
  • They meet their blind partner usually when they are around a year old and the two train together for 2 weeks.
  • Adult dogs guide for 8-12 years
  • It cost about 20,000 dollars to train a guide dog

SPECIES OF GUIDE DOGS

GOLDEN RETRIEVERS, LABRADORS, AND GERMAN SHEPHERDS ARE MOST LIKLY TO BECOME GUIDE DOGS

LABRADORS

  • Is the most chosen in becoming guide dogs
  • They train 70% Labrador Retrievers,
  • Lifespan: 11 y on average (Adult)
  • Weigh male- (65–80 lb), Female- (55–70 lb)
  • Height Male (22.5–24.5 in), Female (21.5–23.5 in)

GOLDEN RETRIEVER

  • Golden retrievers are also one of the most chosen dogs to become guide dogs
  • They train 15% Golden Retrievers
  • Being of a size and weight that are appropriate for working beside a person and riding public transportation
  • The ability to live in a variety of climates, thanks to easily-cared-for double coats
  • The average lifespan for a Golden Retriever is about 11 to 12 years.

GERMAN SHEPHERD

  • German Shepherd are also one of the most chosen to become guide dogs
  • They train 15% German Shepherds
  • The weight standard is (66–88 lb) for males, (49–71 lb) for females.
  • height- (24–26 in) for males, (22–24 in) for females.
  • German Shepherds have a variety of colors tan/black & red/black

Venice and Rodd are two labrador retriever guide dogs that fell in love with one another. They met while in a guide dog training camp, and were always playing and nuzzling together.

HISTORY/SCHOOLS

  • It was founded in 1942 to help veterans who had been blinded in World War ll
  • Large Dog Guide Training Schools is at California & Oregon
  • Established in 1942, Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB) is the largest Guide Dog school in the US.
  • The Human Rights Act gave permission to let guide dogs ride on public transportation
  • There are 12 schools in the USA
