Why is it impossible for money to buy happiness?

As seen in the Great Gatsby, money plays a big role in human lives and the "American Dream". I chose the question "Why is it impossible for money to buy happiness" because I wondered why rich people are often the most sad and empty.

The first source I found, "Loving Money is Bad. Here's Why" discusses what the Bible has to say about money. 1st Timothy 6:10 states that "The love of money is the root of all evil". (Access Jesus 3). Jesus in his teachings put a big emphasis on the fact that money is not necessary, as even he preached to those who were poor.

You may ask why money is the root of all evil? It buys us what we need and what seems to make us happy? The truth is that it is the material things that separate us from the Creator. As it says in the Bible, we cannot bring worldly things to God's kingdom.

It states that "Loving money and over abundance takes away our peace of mind" (Access Jesus 4). Loving money above everything will lead our lives to be destructive. To keep from doing this, we must put materialistic things last.

We should not put money first because it is temporary. This article even puts it in the category with danger and corruption. It only takes care of our material things, and material things decay, never lasting forever.

Finally, the love of money will lead to the lost of our souls. Yes, God gives us choices regarding money, but there will be consequences. We must be aware that loving money above all will have major consequences, which are all negative, ultimately ending our lives.

In the Great Gatsby, Gatsby spends so much money to try and impress Daisy. He thinks that the extravagant parties, his nice shirts, cars, and practically every material thing he has- will impress her. To this, he is incorrect. Even though he does so much, he never gets the girl, and dies before he succeeds.

"Why rich people aren't really happier" is an article discussing why people believe that money and possessions will make them happy. An interesting point it brought up was "Happy Amnesia" (Motley Fool 6). Humans predict their futures, and assume that certain things will bring joy, because our mind makes us believe that they did in the past.

Even time has changed the amount of satisfaction of the average American. Now, Americans are less satisfied that they were in the 1950s. Although pay is much higher now, it shows that the money actually made things worse.

In Gatsby's situation, he was rejected by Daisy and her parents, partially because of his financial situation. To make a change, Jay obtained all this money, to change Daisy's mind. Like the article says will not work, he predicted based on past experiences, ultimately failing.
