  • French and Indian war: France and Great Britain, fought for land in North America
  • 1762: Great Britain in war against Spain
  • 1763: British invaded Pensacola and gained control
  • Great Britain won and land went to Spain
  • Great Britain got control of Havana, Spain wanted it
  • Great Britain traded Havana for FL.

  • Great Britain controlled the Eastern half of Florida
  • G.B. allowed slavery
  • Africans were forced to flee to Havana, Cuba
  • West FL: sandy soil, timber and hunting
  • East FL: peninsula, good soil, selling crops

British Settlers

  • Enslaved Africans worked in fields, plantations in Florida
  • British started to settle FL.
  • Produce: sugar cane & cotton
  • 13 colonies wanted to claim their independence from Britain

Spanish Rule

  • Spanish started to allow slavery
  • 2nd Spanish period
  • Spain allowed US citizens into FL
  • Some enslaved Africans escaped to FL
