LOCATION

  • The Great Barrier Reef is located in Queensland, Australia.
  • 18.2861°S, 147.7000°E.
  • The Great Barrier Reef starts from northwest to southeast Australia which is about 1,250 miles.

HISTORY OF THE GREAT BARRIER REEF

  • The Great Barrier Reef is around the age of 500,000 years old.
  • The Great Barrier Reef its recent formation of the reef is around 6,000 years old
  • During the time of glacial activity the great barrier reef was just flat coastal plains.

WHY ITS FAMOUS

  • The Great Barrier Reef is earths largest structure made by living organisms.
  • The Great Barrier Reef has more than 2,900 reefs and more than 900 islands.
  • You can also dive and snorkle in the great barrier reef!

SPECIES IN THE GREAT BARRIER REEF

  • The Great Barrier Reef has more than 1,500 species of fish!
  • Theres around 5,000 mollusks on the reef.
  • Big groups of dugongs(they're related to manatees)live along the reef.
  • 17 different kinds of snakes live in the warm waters of the reef.
  • Six different breeds of sea turtle live there too!
