PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Geography
China is the fourth largest country and is home to about 1.25 billion people. That's about less than half the worlds population. It has a great variety of climates and terrains. The south of China is wet and tropical, with some rainforest coverage. The north-west of China is covered in desert. In the very far north-east, close to Russia, the temperature can drop to -50 degrees in the winter.
In China they believed in Buddhism. It means that they change in order to develop the qualities of awareness, kindness, and wisdom.
In China they believed in Taoism (or Daoism). Which was a Chinese philosophy based on the writings of Lao-tzu. It advocated humility and religious piety.
Then lastly in China they believed in Confucianism. Confucianism was teachings of Confucius. Confucianism is based on kindness, mutual respect, and an appreciation for character virtues.
Kites- First made were in the year BCE 475-221
Silk- First made in the year 2696 BC
Gunpowder- it was made in the 9th century
Fireworks- they were made in the 7th century
Politics
Ancient China had a government that was ruled by dynasties. Since China was so big they would need a strong government. Emperors and officials had to be models to their people. Ancient Chinese dynasties rand to be very strict.
Trading
In China they would trade. They traded with the West. Mainly people shipped silk to the West, and imported gold. Some traders went south to India, and some went along the northern Silk Road through Turkestan and Uzbekistan to the Persian Empire.
Money
People first in China used cowrie shells as money in 1800 BC. Then people used metal imitations of cowrie shells. Then after metal strings of beads called cash. There was bronze coins in China by the 400s BC.
Kings
The King and his family were the most respected people. They owned the most land and ruled a whole kingdom. They were the most respected because they were wealthy.
Shi, Nong, Gong
Shi, Nong, and Gong were in the middle of the social structure pyramid. Shi was a gentry scholar. Nong was consisted of peasant farmers. Gong was composed of craftsmen and artisans.
Shang
The Shang was the lowest one on the social structure pyramid. They were composed by traders and merchants. Since they couldn't achieve any social status they were placed on the bottom of the pyramid.
