RUN-ONE, FRAGMENTS, FAULTY PARALLELISM

WHAT IS A COMPLETE SENTENCE?

  • Must have at least a subject and a verb
  • Must express a complete thought
  • Can also be called an INDEPENDENT CLAUSE
  • Eg. He writes music.

SENTENCE FRAGMENTS

  • An incomplete sentence
  • Missing a subject, the verb, or both
  • Some sentences with a subject and a verb but follow a subordinating conjunction, adverb, or relative pronoun are not ICs

TYPES OF FRAGMENTS

  • 1. Subordinating conjunction and relative pronoun fragments
  • Eg. While I was waiting for my car to be repaired. Eg. The man who was with you.

  • Correct - connect the fragment to the sentence that comes before or after it. Eg. While I was waiting for my car to be repaired, a fire broke out in the workshop.
  • Eg. The man who was with you is Ted Bundy.
  • Remove the subordinating conjunction/relative pronoun.

2. “ING” FRAGMENT

  • “ing” verb without a helping verb - fragment.
  • Eg. Walking down the street.OR He is walking down the street.
  • Use the correct verb form

3. MISSING SUBJECT FRAGMENT

  • She set off the alarm. Next, closed all the doors.
  • Second sentence has a missing subject i.e. who closed all the doors.
  • Correct by joining sentences OR adding the missing subject.

4. “EXTRA INFORMATION “ FRAGMENT

  • Eg. For instance, clean water and electricity.
  • Usually this fragment has a missing verb
  • To correct, add the subject and verb eg. For instance, basic amenities include clean water and electricity.

RUN-ON SENTENCES

  • Fused sentences eg. He plays the guitar she writes the music.
  • Comma splice eg. He plays the guitar, she writes the music

HOW TO CORRECT?

  • 1. Create a compound sentence using FANBOYS
  • 2. Create 2 ICs
  • 3. Insert a semi-colon
  • 4. Use a subordinating clause

FAULTY PARALLELISM

  • Faulty parallelism in a sentence is when you are writing a list of things and mix up verb forms

  • When writing a list, every item starts with the same type of verb or noun, adjective or adverb format. Examples: 1. "ing" verbs: We went running, biking, swimming, and fishing. 2. "ed" verbs: We walked, jumped and skipped on the way. 3. nouns: We drove to the lake, mountains, desert and beach all in one day. 4. adjective: She had purple, silver-tipped, spiky hair. 5. adverb: Lovingly, graciously and generously, she helped us out.

  • 1. Re-arranging the words. 2. Using a semi-colon to connect two sentences.
