GRAMMAR IS IMPORTANT!!

1. It is the backbone of a language
2. It has a fundamental role in all four domains of language.

However,

grammar has been the nightmare of most students

DEDUCTIVE APPROACH

  • Teaching through rules.
  • The teacher gives the rules of the grammar point.
  • It is moves from general rule to specific examples where the rule is applied.
  • It is quick process, but not memorable.
  • Students are not involved.

INDUCTIVE APPROACH

  • Teaching through examples where the rule is inferred.
  • The students work out the rule of the grammar point.
  • It moves from specific examples to general rules
  • Not quick, but it is more effective.
  • Students are actively involved.

The most effective grammar teaching involves

both deductive and inductive characteristics.
