Parts of Speech
Participle- a verbal that functions as an adjective.
Ex. The cooling breeze went through the abandoned house.
Progressive tense- a tense of verbs used in describing action.
Ex. I am jumping really high.
Perfect verb tenses- They are formed by the appropriate tense of the verb.

Conjunctive adverbs- a function word that connects two independent clauses.
Ex. I didn't do my homework; therefore i did not pass.
Subordinating conjunction- connects a dependent clause to a main clause.
Ex. As Sam ran too fast, he fell on the floor.

Prepositions- a word that shows relationship between a noun or pronoun.
Ex. There is a green truck behind us.
Appositives- a series of nouns placed next to another word or phrase.
Ex. Alcatraz, a well known prison, was shut down do to it being expensive.

Relative pronoun- a pronoun that introduced an adjective clause.
Ex. The house that they live in is large.
Adverbs- a word that modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb.
Ex. the boy wanted a candy bar so he stole one quietly.

Adjectives- a word or phrase that modifies a noun.
Ex. I heard the screeching noise as the car went to a stop.
Antecedents- a thing or event that existed before or logically precedes.

Phrase- a small group of words standing together as a conceptual unit.
Ex. I ate food.
Clause a group of words in a sentence that has a subject and a predicate.
Ex. My dad got home from work and started cooking dinner.

Independent Clause- a clause that can stand for itself.
Ex. I cant play right now.
Dependent Clause- a clause that needs an independent clause.
Ex. Because i got grounded.

Subordinate Clause- a clause, typically introduced by a conjunction,
Ex. play video games when your done with your home work.
Prepositional phrase- a modifying phrase consisting of a preposition.
Ex. I was in the arcade when it closed down.

Ex. Texas, a beautiful place, is amazing!
Relative clause- a clause with relative pronouns who, that, etc.
Ex. Have you seen the animals that live at the zoo?

Adjective phrase- is a phrase whose head on words is an adjective.
Ex. Overly excited.
Adjective clause- a dependent clause that modifies a noun.
Ex. After we have cleaned up the table.

Ex. I stay up late into the night.
Adverbial clause- a group of words with a subject and a verb.
