EARLY LIFE

  • Born on March 15th, 1868 near London, in Haslemere, England.
  • Taught by her mother and a governess at their home.
  • Passed the exam to be accepted into Cambridge University at age 17.
  • Did not go to college until a scholarship was offered 4 years later.
  • Later married William Young who was her tutor at Girton College.
  • Originally wanted to become a doctor.

EDUCATION

  • Attended Girton College at Cambridge.
  • Studied with Felix Klein at Göttingen in Germany.
  • Graduated at age 27 with a Ph.D..
  • The first woman to obtain a Ph.D. in Germany.

MATHEMATICAL WORK

  • Created a geometry book for elementary students
  • Produced many mathematical papers and books with her husband.
  • Began the foundations of calculus.
  • Began the idea of the Theory of Set Points with her husband.

LATER LIFE

  • Within a 9 year period, she had 6 children.
  • Ended mathematical research in the 1920's.
  • Died at age 76 on March 29th, 1944.
  • Three of her children, and 1 grandchild became mathematicians.
  • Some suggested to award her with a honorary degree, although she died before the award could be presented to her.
