STATE OF NATURE

• Hobbes- Beleives men are created equal but meant to live in a state of anarchy
• Locke- Man is bound by natural law and discovered through reason. Property is the source of inequality
• Rousseau- Man has two instincts: self preservation and compassion

STATE OF GOVERNMENT

• Hobbes- Man must submit to sovereign state, has no right to resist
• Locke- Government created to serve its subjects and secure the natural rights of man
• Rousseau- A direct democracy for mans general will
