Buying the Gear

Buying a Michigan Fishing License

  • Any person who is older than 17 must buy a fishing license
  • The price is $26 for the all species annual resident fishing license
  • Non residents annual all species fishing license costs $76

Fishing Size Limits

  • Sunfish has no size limit but you can only keep up to 25 fish
  • Yellow Perch has no size limit and you can keep up to 25 fish
  • Bass has a size limit of 14" and you can only keep 5 fish

Getting Bait

  • Fishing for sunfish you want to buy crawlers the morning you go fishing.
  • If you want to fish for bass or perch you will want to buy live minnows.

Heading to the Fishing Spot

  • Set up your fishing pole
  • Tie the sinker to the end of the fishing line
  • Tie a hook about 5-8 inches above the sinker
  • Cut up one crawler into 4 equal sized pieces
  • Put one piece of the crawler on your fishing pole

Put your Line Out

  • Drop your fishing line with the bait into water
  • Let the line drop to the bottom
  • After the sinker hits the bottom of the water reel in the line until it is snug

Reeling in the fish and taking it off the hook

  • Once your pole is bent start reeling in the line
  • When the fish starts to get close to the boat make sure you pull the fish into the boat
  • Push the fins on the top of the fish back and grab the fish like you are holding a water bottle

Cleaning the fish

  • Make sure you take scales off the fish
  • Once the scales are off put the fish flat on one side of a cutting board.
  • Us a knife to cut behind the fish's head and carry your cut all the way to the tail

Dinner is served
