Golden ratio

Beyda Majano & Joanna Lopez

Historical facts

(What?) Golden Ratio- is a term with an outstanding number of aliases including golden sections and golden mean, are used to describe aesthetically pleasing proportions with a piece

(How?) According to legend, the Greek Philosopher Pythagoras discovered the concept of harmony when he began his studies of proportion while listening to the different sound given off when the blacksmith's hammers hit their anvils. The weights of the hammers and of the anvils all gave different sounds. From there he moved to the study of stringed instruments and the different sounds they produce.

(Why?) Ancient Greek mathematics first studied what we now call the golden ratio because of its frequent appearance in geometry. The division of a line into "extreme and mean ratio" is important in the geometry of regular pentagrams and pentagons.

(Who?) Phidias was the first to make the Parthenon statues which seem to embody the golden ratio.

(Where?) It was discovered in the Ancient Egypt.

(When?)
It's often attributed to Pythagoras which would date it at about 500BC but there is evidence that the Ancient Egyptians used it at the time of the building of the pyramids which would date it to about 2500BC.
