GLOBAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM

AFRICAN LEADERSHIP ACADEMY'S
African Leadership Academy seeks to enable lasting peace and prosperity in Africa by developing and connecting the continent’s future leaders.

The Global Scholars Program is a nineteen-day leadership and entrepreneurship program inspired by two critical questions:

*How can the next generation of global leaders ensure a peaceful and prosperous future for Africa and the world?
*And what are the skills young leaders everywhere in the world must develop to create global change in the 21st century?

BROADEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON AFRICA

Discover the history, beauty, diversity, and energy that is Africa through ALA's Global Scholars Program. Your African Studies discussions, your excursions to the Apartheid Museum and your explorations of the Cradle of Humankind and the Pilanesberg National Park will expose you to Africa in ways you have never imagined.

LEAD & LAUNCH AN INITIATIVE

The Global Scholars Program offers a unique opportunity for its participants to move beyond ‘volunteering’ and explore leadership in action.

In small groups, GSP participants work with community service organizations to design and implement initiatives that will have long-term impact for the communities they serve.

FOR A COMMUNITY IN NEED

The Global Scholars Program offers a unique opportunity for its participants to move beyond ‘volunteering’ and explore leadership in action.

You will contribute meaningful value to social ventures launched by young, socially-conscious leaders like yourself. For example, at the Kliptown Youth Program, you will learn from social entrepreneur Thulani Madondo and tutor at-risk students in an after-school program. At Emthonjeni Day Care, an organization founded by African Leadership Academy alumnus Mbali Zondi, you will provide support in their daily activities aimed at providing a solid educational foundation to at-risk children.

LEARN TRANSFORMATIONAL SKILLS

A foundation of the Global Scholars Program is learning and practicing practical leadership and entrepreneurship skills that will allow you to lead effectively--skills such as Needs Assessment and Prototyping. During the program you will work together with fellow GSP participants and community service organizations to design and implement initiatives where these skills will be put to the test.

Pictured here three students (from the US, Burma and Ghana respectively) working on a Prototyping exercise.

BUILD A POWERFUL NETWORK

As business, politics, and society become increasingly global, countries in Africa cannot afford to exist in a vacuum separate from the rest of the world. Africa's development will be driven not only by Africans living in one of the fifty-four countries on the continent, but also by committed leaders from all over the world. The Global Scholars Program will connect global leaders and challenge them to explore Africa's future as it is relevant to both the success of the African continent and the world.

AND MAKE FRIENDS FROM COUNTRIES ACROSS THE WORLD

In 2012 GSP students from the following countries participated:

Berumda
Burma
Democratic Republic of Congo
France
Ghana
Ivory Coast
Kenya
Lesotho
Mozambique
Nigeria
South Africa
South Sudan
United Kingdom
United States
Zambia
Zimbabwe

As GSP expands for 2013, this list will continue to grow!

AT ALA'S BEAUTIFUL CAMPUS IN JOHANNESBURG

The campus is located in Honeydew, which is about a 45-minute drive from the city of Johannesburg. The campus is self-contained with security fencing at all boundaries and a 24-hour security staff. Students are not allowed to leave campus except under the supervision of ALA staff members.

Students stay in dormitories divided by gender. Each student has one roommate usually from a different country to allow for as much diversity as possible. The halls meet regularly to bond, organise and solve problems and offer new ideas for the future.
