Storming the Bastille
The Third Estate wanted to reform the government.
King Louis XVI refused and the Third Estate revolted.
The Third Estate arrived at the meeting place and the doors were locked
They met in a nearby tennis court and swore
that they would continue meeting until they produced a French Constitution.

That became to be known as the Tennis Court Oath.
While that was happening, the taxes on bread went up.
Common people couldn't afford the bread.
Citizens of the Third Estate and organized a group to storm the Bastille.
This started the French Revolution.
4.
Rights of man
On August 26th, 1979 the Third Estate drafted the Rights of Man and the Citizen.
This was inspired by the Declaration of Independence and Constitution and the English Bill of Rights
The document made that freedom was assured, the First and Second Estate
didn't have to pay taxes, and the basic liberties of the French Revolution were spelled out
The king refused this and the Third Estate was flustered.

A mob of thousands of women marched to the Versailles demanding bread for their children
and made the king release flour from royal stores.
The king became a virtual prisoner in Paris.
Other countries joined in fear of the revolution spreading and put an
end to King Louis' reign.

Reign of Terror
King Louis and his wife were executed by a guillotine.
Any person who was against the revolution was executed.
“Let terror be the order of the Day” was their motto.
It was called the Reign of Terror because the fear, viloence, and the
executions of people wach week.

NOt the only revolution!
The French Revolution followed the American Revolution.
In 1917 Russia overthrew it's monarchy in a very violent way.
In 1911, revolutionaries in southern China had a successful
revolt on the Qing Dynasty.
