SAMR Lens (Love it)

I can control what I do not other teachers .
Although I wanted to do Action Research to help teachers use digital tools in their classrooms, the project would be too large so I decided to zoom in on one class . I wanted to design reading and writing lessons involving digital tools and see what impact occurred with students.

Technology - Provide tech tools which allow for content creation (Tellagami, 30 Hands, Chatterpix and for Collaboration in Padlet)
-Use PBS LrnMedia.org for Storyboard

Pedagogy - Important to know how reading develops and to provide text on students' lexile level

Science Content Knowledge - Read high interest Newsela articles, News-o-Matic app or books about science topics in their curriculum

What is the impact of digital creation tools on students’ engagement as readers and writers?

Will the use of digital creation tools increase students’ reading and writing engagement?

How does a thematic unit guided by the TPACK lesson planning model affect students’ behavioral and cognitive engagement?

How does a thematic unit guided by the TPACK lesson planning model affect students’ behavioral and cognitive engagement as readers, writers and content creators with digital creation tools?

Zoom on Professional Lit

CORI - Concept Oriented Reading Instruction

Five Motivational Practices from CORI

  • Relevance - Match text to students' interests
  • Importance of Thematic Focus
  • Success - Match text to students' reading levels
  • Choice in outcomes/product/project
  • Collaborative Structures
  • (Parody lyrics I made using"Shake It Up" found at my GTN Wiki in Google Pres)

Kahoot - TD students with help of TD teacher

created ?'s for our first Kahoot for class to play.

Stop and Jot on bit.ly/sunstopandjot

  • What are your thoughts about the sun so far (after first page of article)?
  • What is a key idea from the “Meet the Sun” (after first and second paragraphs on 2nd page of article)?
  • Do you agree or disagree with the statement, “There are storms on the sun.” ? Explain your answer. (after fifth paragraph on 2nd page of article)

I modeled how to code using an article on sun and  they wrote on a padlet.

I modeled how to personify an object in writing.

Outer Space

Leveled texts hard to find so used Newsela again and Moon/Sun books
You can copy and paste text into lexile.com to find out the lexile level of the text.

I located NewsELA articles about the rocket that landed on a comet and about a rover that had explored Mars. I gave kids choices about what they read as long as it was in their lexile reading range. I would should them the two articles copied at their level and ask that they choose one.

Some students could choose between the sun or moon in books that I found in my school's book room.

Coding Text

increased engagement!
They wrote on their texts using the "How to Use Sticky Notes" bookmark to help them interact with the text. I would see a high level of engagement as they read and coded. This part took time. We did not jump directly to a tech project. They were given time to read, interact with text and reflect on what they had learned.

Sticky Notes to Code

After showing them how to use Chatterpix and doing a minilesson on how to do a Nonfiction Summary or a Personification of the outer space object, they got to work on creating with iPads.

Chatterpix movie on the sun with sun personified:

Use Chatterpix app, 30 Hands app or Tellagami app to create a digital story about the topic that you read about in your article or book.

How does a thematic unit guided by the TPACK lesson planning model affect students’ behavioral and cognitive engagement as readers, writers and content creators with digital creation tools?

So how do all of these projects relate to my Action Research?

Visit my GTN wiki to see all of the lesson plans and links to the online sites that I've mentioned.

My wiki also includes a Google Slides Presentation. It includes data that I collected in pre and post formats including Lexile Levels, survey responses in Likert Form, and in qualitative comments in response to my questions.
