Gertrude Biography

  • Born: Putnam Connecticut
  • Lived with her brother, sister, mother and father on a farm
  • She didn't finish highschool due to illness
  • During the war teachers were drafted to fight.
  • She was begged to teach first grade at a school because she was a Sunday school teacher

How did she get into writing children's books?

  • She became a first grade teacher
  • When she was sick during her teaching years she was at home and wrote "The Box car children"

Interesting facts

  • Inscription on her tombstone: "She opens her mouth with wisdom and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue."
  • Her favorite book to read was “Alice in Wonderland”
  • She never married
  • She also wrote a book for adults, “Life's Minor Collisions”

  • The boxcar children raised a protest with librarians because the children were having fun without any parental guidance.
